| The
Processions in the Peninsula |
Besides the two processions of Sorrento between Thursday and the Holy Friday night, there are also other sixteen processions that take place in the other Communes of the peninsula.
Three in S. Agnello, seven in Piano di Sorrento, three in Meta, two in Massa Lubrense, one in Vico
Equense. |
SANT'
AGNELLO- The first procession o take place in S. Agnello is the one of the Thursday night, organized by the Confraternity of the Holy Heart of Mary and S. Joseph, better known as the Confraternity of the "Giuseppini" which began in 1887.
Together at the constitution of the Confraternity began also the organization of the Procession that takes place after the celebration of the Mass in "Coena Domini". The "hodded" dress with habit and white colour hood and visit the town's Sepulchres. It was once customs of the Confraternity to visit also the Sepulchres of the neighbouring towns.
The peculiarity of the Procession is that of carrying during the same Procession a statue representing Christ praying in the Gethsemane's garden.
The second procession takes place in the middle of the night between Thursday and Holy Friday. It is organized by the Regal Main Confraternity of the Holy Sacrament and the Nativity of the Holy Mary, whose "hooded" wear white. |
The Procession opens with the "Announcers", that is to say "beaters" of drum and players of trumpet's blares. The biggest suggestion develops around the statue of Our Lady of Sorrow that the tale says is carried to S. Agnello by navy officers coming from Sicily.
A characterising element of the procession is the powerful feminine choir that sings the hymn "Already condemned the Son" (Già condannato il Figlio) which seems to recall the mystery play by Jacopone da Todi "Woman of Paradise" (Donna de Paradiso).
The third procession of S. Agnello is the one organized by the Confraternity of the Dead' s Mountain of the Saints Prisco and Agnello on the evening of the Holy Friday. The "hooded" are dressed in black and carry along the procession an artistic statue of the Dead Christ of the seventeenth century, laid down on a funereal pall of the last century.
A further note of emotion for the audience is the presence of a numerous group of children, leading the Procession, who sing the hymn "Deh
Popoli". |

PIANO DI
SORRENTO- The processions of the Holy Week in Piano begin with the one organized by the main Confraternity of the S. Annunziata on the Holy Thursday.
The three Confraternities of the "Death and Prayers"; of the "S. Trinity of the Pilgrims and Convalescent" and of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, organize the other six processions of the night and the evening of the Holy Friday. The procession of the Trinity procession characterized by the colour red of the clothes, the only one of this colour among the processions of the peninsula.
The procession of the Confraternity of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, distinguished itself because of the participation of some individuals wearing traditional historical clothes, that parade in three different groups.
To conclude, the ceremonies that precede the Holy Friday are very evocative, like the "caught of the Christ and the Blessed Virgin" organized by the Main Confraternity of the Death.
So as it happens during other processions, only the statue of Our Lady of Sorrow is carried on shoulders in the morning, while in the evening also the one of the Dead Christ. |
|
META- There are two Confraternities involved in the organization of the Processions of the Holy Week in Meta: the Main Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception and the Main Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix and Pious Mountain of the Death.
The peculiar characteristic of these Processions is represented by the Choir of the Misere, which it is not sung, as it wants the tradition, in a Gregorian style but in a Verdian style fallowing the motive of an air from the opera "Il Trovatore" by Giuseppe Verdi.
The processions take place one in the evening of the Holy Thursday (organized by the Main Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception); the other two (organized by the Main Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix ) in the evening and during the Friday night with the participation of a choir of white voices that sings the hymn "The Calvary" and "Here it is the victim of Love". |
MASSA
LUBRENSE- The two processions of Massa Lubrense take both place in the evening of the Holy Friday.
One, organized by the main Confraternity of the Death and Prayers, that takes place along the central streets and started at the beginning of this century. The other, organized by the Confraternity of S. Filippo Neri, which starts from the location of
Torca and reaches the neighbouring Parishes of Pastena and S. Agata. This procession doesn't have the choir of the "Miserere" but it has instead a choir of white voices that sings the hymn "Towards the Calvary" fallowing the same text of the Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix of Meta. |
VICO
EQUENSE- Traditionally only one procession used to take place during the Holy Week in Vico Equense, it was organized, every three years, by the Main Confraternity "Death and Prayers" of Seiano. In the last few years, nevertheless, a new and evocative Procession has been organized by the Main Confraternity of the Virgin Mary Received in Heaven (Assunta), which is characterized by the purple colour of the participants' clothes.
This one , even though it is the "youngest" among the processions organized on the our stretch of coast, is acquiring always more fame and importance. |
